Gardenfest showcases native plants at annual O’Hara event

Gardenfest is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11 at Lauri Ann West Community Center in O’Hara.

Gardenfest, the popular showcase of fresh blooms and quality seedlings, returns to O’Hara on May 11.

The event will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lauri Ann West Community Center, 1220 Powers Run Road.

“There’s no better way to celebrate spring,” Jamie Rhoades, director of development, said.

Gardenfest is a springtime tradition that showcases local efforts by Fox Chapel Garden Club, Guyasuta Garden Club, Penn State Master Gardeners, Toad Hollow and The Men’s Garden Club of Pittsburgh.

There are crafts, food vendors and booths filled with tools and gadgets specific to gardening.

Carol Papas, longtime Fox Chapel Garden Club member, warned shoppers that “our pots may be a bit smaller than in the past.”

This is because of a new challenge facing participating clubs — two invasive species called Asian jumping worms and Japanese stilt grass. Both are carried through local soil, Papas said.

“As responsible environmental stewards in our community, Fox Chapel Garden Club is taking an extra step to ensure that the plants that they bring to the sale do not carry either menace,” she said.

Roots will be washed prior to splitting.

“We’ll still have the great selection you’ve come to rely on,” Papas said. “And, you’ll have our best assurance that no invasive species will be hitching on for the ride.”

Throughout the event, gardeners are encouraged to talk with club members to learn tips from those who know best. They’ll share information on maintenance and making sure plants are deer-resistant.

Organizers are also touting unusual native plants for sale and extra-large ferns and hostas.

“Our local garden clubs have created a wonderful springtime tradition that we’re glad we can continue,” Rhoades said. “We’re excited to bring the community together to shop, learn, and enjoy spring with us.”
