Community blood drive
Fox Chapel Area High School is holding a community blood drive Oct. 12 in the school’s large group instruction room from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for people 16 or older. All donors will receive a free T-shirt.
To schedule an appointment, go to DonateBlood.CentralBloodBank.org, call 412-209-7000, call Rachel Machen in the high school guidance office at 412-967-2445 or email rachel_machen@fcasd.edu. Donors are strongly encouraged to sign up, but walk-ins are also welcome.
In addition, anyone who donates blood at a local donor center can ask for the donation to count toward Fox Chapel Area High School’s total by specifying Fox Chapel Area High School (code HS010025).
Vitalant is, once again, offering several scholarships to area high school students. To qualify for these scholarships, Fox Chapel Area High School is hosting blood drives throughout the 2021-2022 school year. The scholarships will be awarded for the highest percent participation and largest number of registered donations for the year. Fox Chapel Area High School 2021 graduates receiving scholarships were Makenzie Brown, Erin Doherty, Ainsley Good, Ashton Monroe, and John Polcyn.
Fox Chapel Area High School’s blood drive is being coordinated by the community outreach committee of the Fox Chapel Area High School Student Government. The high school is located at 611 Field Club Road in O’Hara Township.
Harvest Festival
Best of Blawnox is hosting its Harvest Festival on Oct. 9 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Blawnox Community Park on Center Avenue.
The event will feature bulb planting with Doug Oster from noon to 2 p.m., rock painting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., kids games, food, basket raffles and an appearance by the Shriners clowns.
Local honey, mums and corn stalk will be available for sale along with free pumpkins for the first 40 children.
Student news
• Susan Hicks has enrolled at the University of Findlay for fall 2021. New students began their studies at UF on Aug. 16. Hicks is pursuing a degree in equestrian studies.
• St. Lawrence University welcomed Ryan P. McLaughlin as a member of the Class of 2025. McLaughlin attended high school at Shady Side Academy.
• Aidan Oehrle and Gavin Newcamp have enrolled at Lehigh University as a member of the Class of 2025.
• Ava Kazmierczak has enrolled for the Fall 2021 semester as part of Marietta College’s Class of 2025. Kazmierczak is majoring in psychology.
Celebrity golf outing
The HM3, Jerome Bettis & BHS Foundation Celebrity Golf Outing is scheduled for Oct. 11 at Treesdale Golf & Country Club.
Registration is from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with an 11:30 shotgun start. The outing will be followed by a cocktail reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and dinner and entertainment from 6:30 to 10 p.m.
Celebrity golfers include Rocky Bleier, Neil Walker, Merril Hoge, Donnie Iris, Bob Pompeani, Jim Krenn and Craig Patrick. Foursomes and sponsorships are available. Visit hm3independencefund.org for more information.
Knox Walks For Fitness
Knox Walks for Fitness is a community walking group in Blawnox that promotes fun and fitness. The group meets for walks Mondays at 6 p.m., weather permitting.
Participants should meet at the Blawnox Community Park or can join the walk along the route. The group walks a 1.5-mile lap that ends back at the park. A second lap will take place if enough people are interested.
The weekly event is sponsored by The Best of Blawnox, LLC.
Women’s Business Network
Women’s Business Network is an award-winning business association that supports the success and growth of women in business. WBN provides members with the tools to be successful, including networking, mastermind groups, and ongoing professional education, while expanding their circle of influence in the marketplace. All professional women are welcome to attend as a guest at a meeting for no cost. Some meetings are being held virtually.

Adopt-a-block program
The Best of Blawnox Organization introduces a new volunteer opportunity for community members.
Adopt-a-block is a volunteer program aimed at keeping the streets of Blawnox free from litter and debris.
Volunteers will be assigned one or more designated neighborhood blocks to clean up regularly.
The recommended commitment is a few times a month when it is convenient.
