Chili cook-off

The annual Robert “Snakeguy” Habegger Chili Cook-off is set for Feb. 22 in council chambers at the Sharpsburg Borough Building, 1611 Main St. Proceeds benefit the Sharpsburg Community Library.

Meetings planned

Fox Chapel council will meet Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. at the borough building, 401 Fox Chapel Road.

Sharpsburg council will meet Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the borough building, 1611 Main St.

Reservations begin for park pavilions

Indiana Township residents may now reserve park pavilions for April through October. Nonresident reservations will be accepted starting Feb. 17.

Applications must be made at the township building, 3710 Saxonburg Blvd., during regular business hours and are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment for rental and damage deposit must be made at the time of sign-up. Two separate checks or cash are required. The township does not accept credit cards for the rental fee or the deposit. Renters should bring a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of their damage deposit check.

Parking presentation

Walker Consultants will present its findings from a parking study in Aspinwall at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at the borough building, 217 Commercial Ave.

The 140-page report crafted by the company was submitted to the borough late last year and is under review by the borough council. The study is expected to have an impact on the borough’s residential parking system. The current operation is residents get free and unlimited parking passes.

It is unclear when council may decide to act on any of Walker’s recommendations.

Supervisor leadership switch in Indiana Twp.

Darrin Krally was appointed mayor and Albert Kaan was appointed deputy mayor at the Indiana Township board of supervisors’ reorganization meeting on Jan. 6.

Krally was deputy mayor and Kaan was mayor last year. Both are on the board of supervisors.

All other township officers were reappointed to their respective positions, including Dan Slagle as engineer, Dan Anderson as township manager and attorney Irving Firman of the firm Tucker Arensberg as township solicitor.

Bingo fundraiser

Addiction Recovery Ministry is sponsoring a bingo fundraiser at 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at the John Paul I Center, 201 Ninth St., Sharpsburg. The proceeds will benefit the Light of Life Rescue Mission brown bag lunch fund, which packs lunches to help those suffering from substance use disorders and all who need help with food insecurity on a monthly basis.

Prizes will be awarded for 10 regular games ($25 per game), five specials ($50 per game,) and a jackpot ($200 for the game). Cost is $25 for six cards per game.

Mardi Gras-themed fundraiser

Pittsburgh Bereavement Doulas, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families navigating the difficult journey of pregnancy loss, is hosting its first Mardi Gras-themed fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 28 at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh on the North Shore.

The evening will feature music by Pure Gold Singers, magicians, tarot reading and live dancers. Guests will have New Orleans-inspired drinks, appetizers, dinner and an interactive customizable dessert station.

“We are thrilled to bring the Pittsburgh community together in celebration of life, love and healing,” said Heather Bradley of O’Hara, founder and executive director of Pittsburgh Bereavement Doulas. “Pregnancy loss can be an incredibly isolating experience, and our goal is to ensure that families never have to go through it alone.”

Guests are encouraged to dress in their Mardi Gras best. Masks and beads will be provided.

Winter Flea Market & Benefit Breakfasts

Sharpsburg Neighborhood Organization and the VFW Post 709 are sponsoring Winter Flea Market & Benefit Breakfasts from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 16 and March 16.

The events will take place at the VFW Post 709 Bingo Hall, 1017 Main St., Sharpsburg. A suggested donation for the breakfast will help support the VFW. There is no fee for vendors or flea market attendees. Vendor setup begins at 7 a.m.

AAUW meets monthly

The Fox Chapel area branch of the American Association of University Women meets at 9:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month from September through May at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, 384 Fox Chapel Road.

The group advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, philanthropy, education and research.

Meetings are free and open to anyone interested in joining.

In addition to the monthly meetings, the branch offers members a variety of interest groups as well as numerous opportunities for community service involvement.

AAUW is open to all graduates who hold an associate or equivalent, baccalaureate or higher degree from a qualified college or university. Those enrolled in an associate or a bachelor’s degree program can join AAUW as Student Affiliate Members.

Weight loss support

All are welcome to join the men and women at Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) who are learning how to lose weight. With in-person meetings, rewards, support and encouragement, we gain knowledge of healthy eating and exercise.

You may visit with no obligation on Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave. in Oakmont. Weigh-in is private followed by a brief business meeting, sharing time and educational program all ending by 7:15.

Church events open to community

Monroeville Church of the Brethren, 481 Center Road in Monroeville, is pleased to introduce Pastor Oyango Burney as its interim pastor. Burney recently accepted the position, and he brings a wealth of experience and a passion for serving others.

The congregation also is inviting members of the community and surrounding areas to join a variety of events:

• The church operates a prayer hotline and welcomes requests. If you need prayer and don’t know where to turn, the congregation wants to help and will pray for you. To submit a request, call the church at 412-372-4165.

• A weekly Bible study class meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday.

• Free coffee and doughnuts are served from 10 to 11 a.m. every Sunday.
