The opening of Kayak Pittsburgh in Aspinwall has been delayed after a rise in covid-19 cases in Allegheny County, officials said.
The group had eyed a Friday opening at the Aspinwall Riverfront Park facility, just off Freeport Road.
“We want to be able to open everything up, but we want to be safe as well,” said Ebony Montgomery, director of development and communications.
Kayak Pittsburgh is a kayak rental facility where people, even those with no experience, can learn to get out on the water. One-hour rentals start at $19.
Operated by Venture Outdoors, Kayak Pittsburgh has two other locations, one in North Park and one on Pittsburgh’s North Shore.
The North Park venue is expected to open this weekend, Montgomery said.
That site opened early in June and had been sold out daily before temporarily closing on July 2, while organizers reviewed covid-19 data from the county.
Limited rentals will be available each hour to make sure the equipment can be sanitized and the waterways are less crowded.
Montgomery said the group was hoping to also open in Aspinwall to offer people additional ways to be outside while social distancing.
“We know getting outdoors while staying safe and social distancing is key to helping people reduce stress and stay well,” Venture Outdoors President Valerie Beichner said.
Further notices on opening the locations in Aspinwall and Pittsburgh will be posted to the group’s website.
Anyone with a reservation from July 3-10 will receive a refund.
