Military banners that celebrate local servicemen and women still are available in time for display by Memorial Day in most Lower Valley communities.
Blawnox is the exception.
“Ours are sold out,” secretary Kathy Ulanowicz said. “Blawnox would be happy to participate again if the program is made available next year.”
The District Association in 2018 approved a grant to pay for up to 25 Hometown Heroes Banners in each community of the Fox Chapel Area School District.
Aspinwall, Blawnox, O’Hara and Sharpsburg participated.
The District Association is a community-sponsored nonprofit that funds beautification projects not paid by tax dollars.
Member Carol Uminski said the program pays tribute to residents and their family members who are serving, or have served, the country.
The municipalities are expected to display the banners along their main streets in time for Memorial Day, Heather Golden, of the District Association, said.
The flags, 24-by-36 inches, include the person’s photo, name and branch of service.
They will continue to wave until Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11.
O’Hara Manager Julie Jakubec said the township has banners remaining, as did Aspinwall administrative assistant Brian Corey-O’Connor.
There are 11 still available in the borough, he said.
Residents who would like to apply for a banner to be displayed by Memorial Day still have time. Borough crews will be installing the flags the weekend prior to the annual holiday parade on May 27, he said.
