News briefs: Free flu shot event scheduled for those with chronic health conditions
UPMC St. Margaret and St. Margaret Foundation are hosting a free flu vaccination event for senior citizens and people 18 and older with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease.
This is a drive-thru event from 8 to 10 a.m. Oct. 10.
Participants should stay in their cars, and masks must be worn.
The clinic will be at UPMC St. Margaret, 815 Freeport Road, near Aspinwall, in the parking lot behind the 100 and 200 Medical Arts buildings.
Hot dog fundraiser
The Aspinwall Volunteer Fire Department is having a hot dog fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at the First Street fire hall.
The menu is two hot dogs, chips and a drink for $5. Takeout orders only.
Leaf collection set
O’Hara’s fall leaf collection begins Oct. 12. Residents should place leaves at the curb.
The final collection round will begin Dec. 1.
Residential development vote
Indiana Township Supervisors could vote during their Oct. 13 regular meeting on an application for a planned residential development.
Hartwood Meadows would consist of 75 single-family homes as an expansion to the current Hartwood Meadows Plan, on property at 3340 Lenox Drive.
The board meets at 7 p.m. at the town hall along Saxonburg Boulevard.
Food giveaway
Sharpsburg Family Worship Center offers free produce boxes and groceries from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at the Clay Street building.
On Wednesday evenings, there is a “Wednesday Night Alive” program for children from preschool through eighth grade. It is from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, visit sfwc.org
Park goes leash free
Kennedy Park in Sharpsburg is now dog friendly.
Residents can enjoy their four-legged friends — on a leash — while visiting the park along North Canal Street.
It’s likely to be a popular move since there were no leash-free areas for dogs to run in the borough and because dogs weren’t previously allowed in the park at all, Councilmember Adrianne Laing said.
Waste stations are posted near the park.
Glitter and Glow event canceled
Fox Chapel Garden Club’s Glitter and Glow 2020 is cancelled.
The holiday fundraiser typically features handmade floral pieces to benefit community projects, as the group’s mission is to advocate sound environmental stewardship.
Members thanked past ticket holders for their support and said they look forward to the event returning in 2021.
