More than 300 people turned out to bid farewell to Kerr Elementary in the Fox Chapel Area School District during the “Last Open House” on June 6.

“We had a really nice turnout,” Jill Leonard, district community engagement specialist, said. “We had folks in their 80s and families who brought their current students. It was a really nice mix.”

Kerr Elementary has served the community for 90 years but will be razed this summer while crews put finishing touches on a new $21 million school next door at the Kittanning Pike campus.

Leonard said district officials felt it was important to give residents one last peek inside the halls of Kerr before demolition, which is expected to begin next week.

“We wanted to make sure that the generations of students who have gone through its doors had a chance to say a final farewell,” she said.

Students are expected to begin the 2019-2020 school year in the new building, a 72,348-square-foot site with collaborative labs and makerspaces fit for 21st century learning.
