Blawnox residents can look for a new development at the corner of Center Avenue and Freeport Road.

Council recently approved construction of a building at the intersection, near the entrance to RIDC Park.

Members unanimously approved the subdivision of property along with the development agreement. Deborah Laskey, council president, was absent.

Developer of the project is I&M Freeport Partners. Representatives said the new building will be retail space.

Councilwoman Jessica Dayhoff, the borough’s representative to the planning committee, said she hasn’t seen drawings yet. She is not certain what type of businesses will be there but said adequate parking is planned.

In other news, council adopted an ordinance setting the 2019 tax rate at 9.85 mills.

Council in December adopted the $1.4 million budget, holding the rate steady for four years. The owner of a home assessed at $100,000 will pay $985.

Members also reminded residents that the borough’s new garbage rates are in effect. Fees climbed from $55 to $58 a quarter.

Water rates also increased, from $7.95 to $9.15 per 1,000 gallons, with a minimum of 3,000 gallons.
