Students in the Shady Side Academy Senior School Service Learning Club designed and sold T-shirts with SSA’s distance learning motto, “Together Apart,” on them as a covid-19 fundraiser.
The initial proceeds totaled nearly $1,700 and went to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The club sold 170 shirts and money raised will provide more than 8,000 meals for local families in need.
However, due to popular demand, the shirts are being sold online until 3 p.m. June 19.

The Shady Side Academy Junior School fourth-grade class collected seven carloads of donations for Humane Animal Rescue during the class’ annual Furry Friends Project from May 19-22.
Despite the school building being closed due to covid-19, families were encouraged to drop off donations. Items collected included dog and cat food, clean blankets and towels, and hand and dish soap.
Humane Animal Rescue Manager of Humane and Wildlife Education Alexis Fitzgerald joined a fourth grade Zoom class to teach the students about the group’s mission, which is to provide temporary shelter, food, medical attention and comfort to abandoned, neglected and injured animals brought to their shelters.
