The Sharpsburg Community Library offered activities to honor Black History Month.

The library works to ensure that Black writers and artists are featured in its programs and are on its shelves year-round, said library manager Sara Mariacher. It also creates programming to highlight holidays and national heritage months, such as Black History Month, which was in February.

Sharpsburg resident Lucille Delucca, a participant in the library’s Senior Craft & Chat for senior adults, created a collage. During the Feb. 1 Craft & Chat program, participants were introduced to the work of eminent collage artist Romare Bearden, an African American who graduated from Peabody High School in Pittsburgh.

The library’s inaugural Career Chronicles program on Jan. 25 focused on the profession of ARTivist, an artist/activist. Participants created speech bubbles to speak about things that mattered to them. Shannon Finley, a teacher at Fox Chapel Area High School, held a speech bubble she made, stating, “I am the global majority,” which references that people of color comprise 85% of the world’s population.
