With a definitive weekend weather forecast still outstanding, tweaks are being made to the schedule for the 18th annual Allegheny County High School Wrestling Championship at Fox Chapel Area High School.
There will be an additional round of wrestling on Friday (Jan. 18), returning 12 wrestlers on Saturday instead of the 16 as originally planned.
If teams are weighed in, scratches complete and brackets ready, wrestling will be pushed up slightly, from noon to 11:45 a.m. Friday.
On Saturday, weigh-ins will be at 9 a.m. and wrestlers will take to the mats at 10 a..m. A late afternoon break will be eliminated but shorter rests will be scheduled throughout the morning.
The Medal Round will use three mats, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the main gym.
After a short break to reconfigure, the Parade of Champions and Finals will proceed on one mat. The event is expected to wrap at about 5:30 p.m. in hopes of avoiding the heavier snow predicted late Saturday through Sunday.
Some of the region’s most elite wrestlers will be showcased at the event.
Longtime Foxes Coach Ron Frank said he is expecting to host more than 1,000 individual matches over the weekend.
North Allegheny High School has the most seeded wrestlers in the tournament with nine, followed by Thomas Jefferson, West Mifflin and Carrick high schools with six each.
Hampton, Fox Chapel Area, Keystone Oaks, Mt Lebanon, Quaker Valley and Pine- Richland high schools have five seeded grapplers.
