Hampton area happenings, week of Oct. 17, 2022
Depreciation Lands Museum
Family lantern tours are scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Depreciation Lands Museum, 4743 S. Pioneer Road, Hampton.
Enjoy a tour of the cemetery and Village of Talley Cavey entirely by lantern light. Tours take about one hour and continue regardless of weather, and they are recommended for adults and children age 7 and older.
Guests will complete the evening with refreshments in the museum’s Deacon’s Tavern.
Tickets must be pre-purchased for the desired tour time at www.dlmuseum.org. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
Also scheduled at the museum:
Beggars Day may have originated in Des Moines, Iowa, during the Great Depression as a way to allow younger children to participate in the trick-or-treat tradition of Halloween but remain safe from the antics of older children on Devil’s Night. It traditionally was the day before Halloween.
Children visiting the Depreciation Lands Museum in costume on Oct. 30 will receive treats varying from individually wrapped candies to trinkets.
Beggars Day also is the last day the museum is open for the 2022 season.
Trunk or Treat
Hampton Presbyterian Church will hold a “Trunk or Treat” event from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 29 in the lower parking lot and adjoining field at 2942 E. Hardies Road. The event is open to the community.
Adults are invited to decorate the backs of their cars for Halloween, load up on candy and arrive at the
parking lot by 1 to 1:30 for kids to trick-or-treat from vehicle to vehicle. Please RSVP to www.signupgenius.com/go/5080B4FAEAC2EA46-trunk. The organizers have slots for the first 20 people who respond.
Youngsters can dress up in costume, play games and get candy while the grownups socialize. Participating children are asked to RSVP to hamptonpresoutreach@gmail.com.
