Hampton students recognized in National Merit program

Ten Hampton High School seniors have been recognized in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Three students — William Girard, John Hutton and Amiya Johnson — were named among the more than 16,000 Semifinalists across the United States. Emma An, Woohyon Chong, Hannah Dietrich, Emma Homison, Aja Lynn, Sadie Shelkey, and Ryan Wukitch were also recognized as Commended Students.

Hampton High School’s three semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered in the spring. From over 16,000 Semifinalists, more than 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation.

Merit Scholar designees are selected based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Awards competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during their junior year.
