Students take off from the starting line of the 2019 Hampton 5K race.

The biggest fundraiser of the year for the Hampton Alliance for Educational Excellence (HAEE) will be run, rain or shine, on Oct. 9.

This will be the 29th running of the race with the proceeds supporting many different programs within the Hampton Township School District.

“We’re very excited to be together after a virtual, neighborhood-based walk in 2020,” said HAEE President Maureen Perkins.

Students from all three Hampton elementary schools compete for a prize — “The Alliance Cup.” The school with the highest percentage of participation from students and staff will win the award.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Loughead has his own contest going on for elementary students, as well. Winners of the “Loughead Challenge” will be awarded with homework passes. The awards are based on participation levels for each grade at the three elementary schools.

Middle school students are also participating in the challenge, split between two teams for each grade, and will be competing “for bragging rights and lunchtime ice cream treats,” Perkins said.

The HAEE was founded in 1992 and is a nonprofit working to provide funding for scholarships and projects throughout the district, having raised more than $1 million by grants and sponsorships.

Some of the projects that have come from HAEE funding include the Learning Pavilion at the middle school, two STEM courtyards at the Central Elementary and DNA analysis tools at the high school.

Two scholarships are available from the HAEE for Hampton seniors. The Hampton All-Around Effort and Excellence Scholarship and the Anna Kuhn Memorial Scholarship are both funded by the HAEE.

More information about the race and the HAEE can be found on their website at hamptonalliance.org.
