Carnegie Science Center’s Lettuce Grow Together! program

The Carnegie Science Center is teaming up with North Hills Community Outreach to broadcast three Facebook Live events that will explore the science behind gardening and healthy eating.

The following virtual events will be hosted on Carnegie Science Center’s Facebook page and will be available on the Science Center’s YouTube channel following the livestream:

• Harvesting Lettuce and Making a Salad, April 21 at 11 a.m.: Learn how to seed, grow and harvest lettuce to make a delicious and nutritious salad.

• Apiaries and Bees, May 19 at 11 a.m.: Take a virtual tour of North Hills Community Outreach’s apiary and learn about the relationship between bees and plants.

These Facebook Live events are part of Carnegie Science Center’s Lettuce Grow Together! program, sponsored by GrowingGreat and Del Monte Foods. Learn more at: carnegiesciencecenter.org.

Library to close for HVAC installation

The Hampton Community Library will be closed April 12-17 for the installation of an HVAC system. No items checked out from HCL will be due that week. There will be no fines assessed. Please do not come to the Community Center to return items, as the bookdrop and access to the bookdrop will be blocked. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please check the website or call for updates.

Yard waste collection resumes

Yard waste will be picked up by Waste Management the third full week of each month, from April through November, the same day as your trash and recycling.

Items included are:

• Brush

• Garden residue (no dirt attached) in paper biodegradable bags

• Limbs

• Shrubbery

• Tree trimmings cut in 4-foot lengths, no larger than 3 inches diameter, no greater than 40 pounds securely tied and bundled

• Twigs

No grass clippings will be collected. Grass clippings may be put with your garbage on your garbage day.

At the library

The Hampton Community Library is continuing its virtual programming. See below for more details.

• On the Road: A Family Adventure on Wednesdays Mornings at 8 a.m.

We care about the important learning that happens through reading, writing, singing and playing. Tune in to a new adventure each week with Ms. Annie and get ready to go places, make things, think about stuff and share ideas. This will be posted on the Hampton Community Library Facebook, Instagram and blog pages Wednesday mornings at 8 through April.

• ABC Storytime on Thursdays at 1 p.m.

Miss Suzy is still traveling down alphabet lane. Each week will star a different letter of the alphabet with stories, songs and smiles. Posted on the Hampton Community Library Facebook, Instagram and blog pages on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. through April.

• Listen Up! on Friday afternoons at 1 p.m.

Somewhere between book club, podcast and digital workshop lives an opportunity for children and youth to be inspired by a story. Each week, listen to the first chapter of a book guaranteed to light a fire in the brain. Explore discussion questions, a journal prompt and project extension, or just check out the entire story using your library card (eBook, print book and audiobooks available). • Good Night — Sleep Tight! on Sundays at 7 p.m.

Sundays are a good time to relax and wind down from the weekend. Join Miss Suzy and Fluffy in your pajamas and with your favorite bedtime friend for bedtime stories, songs and rhymes. • Murder by the Book! A Mystery Book Discussion on April 21 at 6:30 p.m.

The Mystery Book Group will be meeting by Zoom. The book is “Eight Perfect Murders,” by Peter Swanson. Books will no longer be available at the circulation desk. Please call the library to request a copy of the book. Anyone interested in great reads is invited to join.

• Betty’s Book Buzz Discussion Group on April 16 at 1 p.m.

Betty’s Book Group will be meeting in the library, after the it closes. The book is “The Chicken Runs at Midnight,” by Tom Friend. Books will no longer be available at the circulation desk. Please call the library to request a copy of the book. Anyone interested in great conversations and good reads is invited to join.
