Back to school
Hampton Township School District students report for the first day of the new academic year on Aug. 22. Also on the district calendar are:
• Sept. 3 — School board work session, 7 p.m., Hampton Middle School library.
• Sept. 9 — School board voting meeting, 7:30 p.m., middle school library.
• Sept. 13 — Military Appreciation varsity football game vs. Upper St. Clair, 7 p.m., Fridley Field.
• Sept. 27 — Talbot Tailgate and Homecoming. The tailgate will take place from 3:30 to 7 p.m. in the middle school rear parking lot. The football team will take on McKeesport Area at 7 p.m. at Fridley Field, with the Homecoming event taking place at halftime.
Singer to entertain AARP
AARP 595 meets at 12:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at Hampton Presbyterian Church at 2942 E. Hardies Road.
We welcome visitors and new members.
The next meeting is Sept. 3, with entertainment by vocalist Renee Storm. Visitors and new members are welcome. Dues are $10 per year.

Dog swim day
Hampton Community Pool will go to the dogs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 7.
Dog swim day will be available for 2024 pool members only, with a $15 fee per dog. Registration deadline is Aug. 30. Call the Hampton Community Center Service Desk, 412-487-7870, or visit hampton-pa.org/375/Dog-Swim-Day.
During the event, the pool will be open for dog swimming only.
Chrysanthemum sale
Greybrooke Garden Club will host its Hardy Mum Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 7 at McCandless Crossing, in the grassy area near BJ’s Restaurant and Bonefish Grill. Proceeds from the fundraiser support annual donations to conservancy groups and worthy community organizations.
The club will hold its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Latodami Nature Center in North Park, 575 Brown Road. A Latodami naturalist will present a program on owls, and guests are welcome. Learn how, as the sun sets, Pennsylvania’s most silent hunters arise and seek prey in darkness.
A business meeting and light refreshments will follow the program. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Karen at 412-366-2096 by Sept. 4.

Race benefits student programs
The HAEE 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Oct. 13 at Hampton Community Park as the main annual fundraiser for the Hampton Alliance for Educational Excellence.
The volunteer-run nonprofit grants thousands of dollars to enrich the educational experience in each of Hampton’s schools, including programs for the advancement of technology in the curriculum, hands-on inventive learning in all academic areas through special programs, and added support for special needs, physical education and the arts.
Registration on race day is from 7 to 8:45 a.m. The race starts at 9. Custom awards will be given to the top male/female runners in each age category: 10 and under, 12-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60-plus.

Outdoor concert series
Highpointe at Rebecca is hosting a free summer concert series at 1871 Highpointe Lane, West Deer.
The concerts will be held in our outdoor courtyard, weather permitting, or indoors if necessary. Tours of the campus will be available for an hour before each performance. Scheduled to perform are:
• The Highlife Band, 2 to 3 p.m. Aug. 15. Playing together for over a decade, the HighLife Band takes audiences on a journey through well-known songs of the ’60s and ’70s all the way up to today. Enjoy music from the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, Tom Petty and more.
• Miss Freddye’s Homecookin’ Band, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 27. The award-winning singer will perform a diverse musical repertoire, including blues, gospel, rock and a touch of country and bluegrass. She will be accompanied by her acoustic band.
