Grand opening for fitness room

The Pine Community Center will celebrate its 15th birthday on Feb. 17 with the grand opening of a new fitness room.

The member-exclusive event will include fitness classes in the new room, programs for kids, cupcakes and refreshments. Members who attend will receive a three-day guest pass to give to a friend.

Scheduled are a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m.; interval fitness class in the new room and children’s birthday canvas painting, 9:30 to 10:30; ABC (Arms, Booty, Core) fitness class and open gym for kids with a brush tattoo artist from Mike the Balloon Guy, 10:30 to 11:30; and Zumba for kids in the new room, 11:30 to noon.

‘Teens and Mental Health’ presentation

The Pine-Richland community is invited to attend “It’s Real: Teens and Mental Health,” a presentation by the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Featuring speaker Jesse Putkoski, the chapter’s president, the event is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Pine-Richland High School auditorium.

The presentation will be delivered to students in ninth through 12th grades during physical education and health classes on Feb. 16, or during activity periods on Feb. 22, March 7 and March 14.

Designed specifically for teens, the presentation provides a general overview of youth mental health resources, information on risk factors and warning signs, and tips and strategies for starting a caring conversation about mental health. The program also provides information on how to encourage healthy methods of self-care and a continuum of supportive services.

VFD pancake, sausage breakfast

Richland Township Volunteer Fire Department’s annual all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 3 at the VFD social hall, 5857 Meridian Road.

There is no admission, but the department is asking for a freewill donation. The breakfast is held regardless of the weather and features regular and buckwheat pancakes, fresh sausage, hot cinnamon apples and beverages.

A Chinese auction will be held, with a variety of baskets and items up for chance. Donations are accepted.

The event is one of the many fundraisers held by the department, with the proceeds benefiting the general and building funds.

Brain injury program at Pine-Richland

Pine-Richland High School will partner with BrainSTEPS to host an informational night about brain injuries, including concussions, starting at 6 o’clock on March 12.

BrainSTEPS offers brain injury-related consultation and training to school staff members, students and parents in all Pennsylvania public schools. The program also monitors students by checking in with their parents annually until the student graduates, aiming to identify any new learning or behavior issues that may arise over time, which is common after a brain injury.

Easter egg hunt in Richland

Richland’s annual Easter egg hunt is scheduled for March 23 at Richland Township Community Park, 1157 Van Velsor Drive. The free event is for township residents only and will be held rain or shine.

Three sessions are featured: 10 to 10:30 a.m. at the upper soccer field, 11 to 11:30 at the lower football field, and noon to 12:30 at the family pavilion. Please bring an empty egg carton.

Registration is necessary by March 15 at secure.rec1.com/PA/richland-township-pa/ catalog. You must choose a time slot. Please arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before the event.

Spring leaf pickup day

Richland’s spring leaf pickup day is scheduled for April 3.

All bags must be out prior to 6 a.m., and all items must be in biodegradable paper bags for pickup. Plastic bags are not acceptable. Please limit each bag to 40 pounds.

The collection will include bagged garden residue and vegetative material. Tree trimmings must be tied/bound branches no larger than 3 inches diameter and not exceeding 48 inches in length.

Depreciation Lands history lecture

Author and historian Jonathon Klemens will present “The Story of the Depreciation Lands: Celebrating 240 Years of History” at 7 p.m. Feb. 22, George Washington’s birthday, at the Depreciation Lands Museum, 4743 S. Pioneer Road, Hampton.

Learn how the Depreciation Lands was established and how it developed. Tickets must be purchased in advance, at $10 for Depreciation Lands Museum Association members and $12 for nonmembers, and space is limited.
