In brief: Road closures, other Hampton area happenings, week of Aug. 28, 2023
Duncan Ave. closure starts Sept. 5
Duncan Avenue will close at Stillhouse Run Bridge No. 1, which is located near Bryant Road in Hampton, beginning at 9 a.m. Sept. 5.
The closure is expected to end in November. It is required for slope stabilization work, roadway reconstruction and drainage improvements, according to the Allegheny County Department of Public Works.
Traffic will be detoured using Mt. Royal Boulevard and Ferguson Road. Residents living near the closure will have access to their homes at all times.
The project will be done by Allison Park Contractors Inc. of West Deer as part of a $2 million-plus capital bridges contract.
AARP 595 meets
AARP 595 welcomes new members and guests to its meetings, held at 12:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at Hampton Presbyterian Church, 2842 E. Hardies Road.
Dues are $10 per year. Activities include luncheons, entertainment and trips.

Greybrooke Garden Club
Greybrooke Garden Club holds regular meetings the second Wednesday of the month in the fellowship hall of Parkwood United Presbyterian Church, 4289 Mt. Royal Boulevard, Hampton. Founded in 1969 by residents of the Greybrooke neighborhood, club members now live in various parts of the North Hills.
The club will host a fall mum sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 at McCandless Crossing in the grassy area near BJ’s Restaurant and Bonefish Grill. Proceeds from the fundraiser support donations to conservancy groups and worthy community organizations.

Work on Dorseyville Road
Dorseyville Road between Rawlins Run Road and Fox Chapel Road in Indiana Township will be closed into November for the replacement of Little Pine Creek Bridge No. 15, according to the Allegheny County Department of Public Works.
The work will include new pavement, scour protection, pavement markings and guide rail. Traffic will be detoured using Harts Run Road and Saxonburg Boulevard.
Another project on Dorseyville Road involving milling and paving, base repairs, drainage improvements, shoulder work and guide rail replacement will continue while the bridge is being replaced. That work requires periodic single-lane closures between Fox Chapel Road and Saxonburg Boulevard.
Gulf War Memorial Plaque
Hampton Township, the Hampton Community Association and American Legion Post 296 are compiling the names of individuals of current of former township residents who served on active duty during the Gulf War, beginning Aug. 2, 1990, and extending to the present.
The endeavor aims to honor their service and to establish an additional plaque that will be affixed to the township’s Veterans Memorial. Information should be submitted by Dec. 31 to facilitate preparations for the unveiling of the plaque on Memorial Day.

Sealarks Women’s Group
Sealarks Women’s Group will meet at 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at Memorial Park Church, 8800 Peebles Road, McCandless.
The event is the season’s Kickoff Dinner. Cost is $10 for guests and $5 for members. Contact Karen at 412-366-3109 for information and reservations.
The group provides Christian fellowship and social activity for women alone. All women alone are welcome to attend and consider joining the group.
Sale of preschool items
The Deer Creek Preschool at Deer Creek Presbyterian Church has closed.
Items including toys, books, furniture and more will be offered for sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9 at the church, 33 Bairdford Road, West Deer.
Benefit golf outing
The Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western Pennsylvania will host the third annual MGA Golf Outing to benefit the organization’s free patient support services on Sept. 24 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club in West Deer.
Registration and check-in begins at 11:30 a.m., and a shotgun start is at 1 p.m. In addition to 18 holes of golf, attendees will be treated to a grilled lunch during registration and a buffet dinner.
Individual registration is $125 per golfer. Tickets are also available for a dinner-only option at $30 per person. The outing will feature a hole-in-one contest, putting contest and other on-course events.
