A man was arrested Friday in Spring Garden for possessing a firearm with an altered serial number, police said.

Pittsburgh detectives observed James Kendrick with a heavy, weighted object in his pocket, which was believed to be a firearm, when they were patrolling the area of Rhine Street and Buente Street.

Kendrick, 29, of Turtle Creek, was known to police to be a person who is not permitted to to possess a weapon, police reported.

When he was approached by detectives, who identified themselves as Pittsburgh police, Kendrick fled on foot, according to police.

“Following a short pursuit, he was detained, and the object in his pocket was confirmed to be a firearm with an obliterated serial number,” police said.

Kendrick was then interviewed at police headquarters and arrested, police said

He is charged with possession of a firearm with an altered manufacturer’s number, carrying a firearm without a license, evading arrest or detention on foot and prohibited acts, according to police.

Police said Kendrick was transported to Allegheny County Jail.
