A chase involving Pittsburgh police turned deadly early Sunday morning.

One man died after fleeing the police in Pittsburgh’s Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood and crashing into a wall.

The events began when officers responded to a crash scene at Eckert Street and Beaver Avenue around 6:40 a.m. They saw a car pinned against a wall, and the male driver was unresponsive. Police said the driver woke up and spoke to officers through a window.

During the conversation, police officers saw a large amount of narcotics on the man’s lap and asked him to get out of the car. They said the man drove off and hit an unoccupied patrol car head-on while speeding south on Beaver Avenue.

The car then hit a light standard on Island Avenue before crashing into a wall and catching fire, according to police. The driver was pulled from the car and taken to a hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries.

Police are investigating.
