A man was hospitalized late Thursday after being shot in the abdomen, according to Pittsburgh police.

Officers responded to a Shotspotter alert on Brushton Avenue in Homewood North around 11:10 p.m. The man told investigators that a woman shot him and then ran into a wooded area.

He was taken to a local hospital by paramedics and was listed in stable condition, police said.

Pittsburgh has been seeing a surge in violent crime this year, according to city leaders. As of April 19, police have investigated 20 homicides and nearly 50 non-fatal shootings in 2021, according to numbers provided by the city’s Department of Public Safety.

That’s an an 80% increase in homicides and a 90% increase in shootings when compared to the same time last year.

Gun violence also rose in 2020 — the number of aggravated assaults with guns increased slightly from 161 in 2019 to 180 in 2020. The number of non-fatal shootings also increased, from 146 to 154 in 2020, according to the department’s annual report.
