Last year, over 2,500 people showed up for Monroeville Public Library’s Fun Fest.
For 2023, they’re expecting even more for the annual event, scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 26 on the library grounds, 4000 Gateway Campus Blvd.
“This is the fifth year, and it grows every year. We really do count the attendance, because it’s important to our sponsors to know how many people they are getting in front of,” said Alice Rathjen, head of public relations at the library.
The library holds nothing back when it comes to entertainment for the day, and the special guest this year is Daniel Tiger, son of the beloved puppet Daniel Striped Tiger from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”
“We have a great relationship with PBS, so this is something we are really excited about,” Rathjen said. “He will be making special appearances from 1 to 3 p.m.”
Daniel Tiger won’t be the only “animal” in attendance, as another attraction is back by popular demand, according to Rathjen.
“Oh, the kids just love the petting zoo. We had to have it again. I think they are bringing a baby llama this year,” she said.
In addition to the animals are food, beverages and tickets to inflatable rides for purchase, and lots of free activities for the kids while a DJ plays music throughout the event.
“We are going to have the hair tinsel for kids,” said Rathjen. “There will also be a balloon artist who is free and a strolling magician who is very good.”
Multiple tables will be set up for youngsters to do other projects at no charge, including painting small ceramic unicorns, turtles and teddy bears to use as banks. Businesses will have tables in the parking lot, handing out information and potentially giveaways.
Along with Monroeville residents, folks from Pitcairn, Plum, Murrysville and other nearby municipalities are likely to visit.
“This is a great community event that has food, games, music and activities,” said Joe Sedlak, acting municipal manager of Monroeville.
The library would like to give special thanks to the Gold Level sponsor, UPMC East, and Silver Level sponsors, Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish and Friends of the Monroeville Public Library, for helping to increase the excitement at the Fun Fest.
