Gateway Musical and Monroeville Recreation Parks partnered for the second year in a row for Gateway’s Summer Theater Camp. All students entering third through eighth grades at Gateway and surrounding districts were welcome to participate.

Approximately 25 campers auditioned on June 22; workshops on acting, vocal lessons, choreography and staging were held June 24 – 28.

After a week of rehearsal, Summer Theater Camp presented “Frozen Kids” — a shorter version of Disney’s “Frozen” — on June 29 with two shows at the high school’s Robert A. Read Performing Arts Center.

“We only have five days of rehearsal and we’re able to put on a full show – costumes, the set, lighting. It’s really something,” said Director Eric Phelps. He is a Penn Trafford alum and a New York University’s Tisch School graduate.

“We’re very excited and appreciative to have all of the student volunteers,” added Associate Director Janine Kucinski.

Producer Mary Chase said there were 19 volunteers and more than a dozen staff members.

“It’s a different experience than I’m used to, but it’s very rewarding,” said Assistant Stage Manager Richard Lehman, a 2024 Penn Trafford graduate and sophomore at Pace University.

Summer Theater Camp is sponsored by Gateway Musical and Monroeville Recreation Parks, as well as local business. Financial assistance is awarded to children in need.
