Juneteenth program at Monroeville library
Monroeville Public Library is partnering with the Gateway High School Black Student Union to host a Juneteenth story time at 10:30 a.m. June 3.
Juneteenth, a celebration of Black culture, commemorates the enslaved people of Galveston Bay, Texas, receiving news of the Emancipation Proclamation on June 19, 1865. The occasion is observed nationwide with Juneteenth events and activities.
The story time will feature books, songs and a simple craft that highlight Juneteenth. The event is suitable for children ages 3 to 7, and families are welcome to attend. Admission is free, and it will be held in the library Children’s Room. No registration is necessary to participate.
Family Summer Fest scheduled
First Baptist Church and Iglesia Hispana Church of Monroeville are sponsors of the Family Summer Fest, a fun-filled event suitable for all ages.
The festivities will take place on June 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 3970 Monroeville Blvd. Attendees can look forward to live music, engaging games, a bounce house, delectable food options and refreshing Kona Ice.
The event and all its entertainment are free for everyone to enjoy, regardless of age or background, and will be held rain or shine.
Summer choir camp scheduled
Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church will host a choir camp for ages 4 through 12 from 9 a.m. to noon July 10-14 at 1622 James St., Monroeville.
Choir director and vocalist Lynn DeFalco will lead the camp. A performance for family and friends is planned for Friday at noon. Participants have the option to sing at the Sunday church service following the camp.
Throughout the week, the children will have the opportunity to interact with musicians who will showcase their instruments and demonstrate how they can accompany songs. The camp will also include daily Bible lessons, games, activities and snack time.
The camp program is made possible through a grant from Pittsburgh Presbytery and the support of volunteer staff from Bethel Presbyterian Church in Monroeville. As a result, no fees are required for participation.
To register, contact the church at 412-824-5600 and provide your child’s name and age, and your contact information for mailings and email notifications.
