The Pittsburgh Association of School Retirees honored Monroeville resident Susan Frazier DeLaney recently with the Volunteer of the Year Award during a luncheon at Rivers Casino.

Almost 200 guests attended, over half of whom were family, friends and members of various organizations and boards on which DeLaney serves.

The primary mission of the PASR organization is to serve others in need — exclusively the interests of school retirees, no matter the position held prior to retirement — and to help one another enjoy retirement.

When someone asked how many hours DeLaney has served volunteering over the past year, she responded that she doesn’t count the hours or days, but rather she tries to make every hour and day count.

She has taught for more than 45 years in various Pittsburgh Public and other Allegheny County schools. It was her dedicated passion advocating for student excellence through programs such as RAMP (Raising Achievement in Monroeville and Pitcairn) that inspired her to run for director on Gateway School Board, a position to which she was reelected in 2023.

In addition to being a member and serving as scholarship chairman of the Rotary Club of Monroeville, DeLaney is a member of the Forbes Hospital Family and Patient Advisory Board, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and a fundraising chairman for the nonprofit Ivy Charitable Endowment.

She is the founder of the William C. & Susan A. DeLaney Scholarship Fund, making it possible for over 19 students in Allegheny County to receive scholarships over the past five years.

DeLaney is a member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Larimer, where she began writing articles for the The Mount magazine. As a result of her involvement, she was encouraged to publish her first book, “Budding and Wilted Roses: Inspirational Poems Through Life’s Seasons.”

The book reflects how she has weathered various storms and challenges in her life in an effort to serve as an inspiration for others.

In addition to various community service-related activities, she enjoys dressing as historical figures and reading to elementary students.
