Unfavorable weather conditions and unforeseen issues have extended the Center Road project in Monroeville, a Monroeville Municipal Authority (MMA) official said.

Jim Hunter, authority general manager, said the project will stretch into September. Road base repair work is scheduled to begin Aug. 19.

Also starting Aug. 19, Center Road will close between Beatty Road and Old Haymaker Road. The section is expected to reopen Aug. 23.

The work is expected to last up to three weeks, and travelers should anticipate lane restrictions between Evergreen Drive and Old Frankstown Road, and a detour. Hunter said the detour needs approval by municipal, county and state officials.

When the base road repair is complete, the Allegheny County Engineering Department will move in to mill and pave the same section.

The $850,000 project began last summer when MMA crews repaired an 8-inch sewer line along the 500 block of Center Road.

A portion of the pipe, along with an 8-inch water line, is directly under the road, Hunter said, which required work by J.S. Bova Excavating. The company was expected to be done with the repairs by the end of July.

Hunter said the work was delayed by rain storms and a discovery of concrete under the road that crews were unaware of before starting the repair work.

“That’s just what you run into in the business,” he said.

Fixing that problem, Hunter said, could cost up to an additional $170,000, or 20% of the $850,000 project.
