News briefs: AVETS breaks ground on new facility; recycling event scheduled
Allegheny Veterinary Emergency, Trauma, and Specialty broke ground on its new, 19,000-square-foot veterinary hospital Sept. 24. The building will be located at 2674 Monroeville Blvd., less than two miles from the existing site on Northern Pike.
Officials expect the new pet hospital to be operational by early summer 2021. It will be equipped with new medical equipment, four surgery suites, a dedicated critical care unit and double the amount of clinical space.

Recycling event set
Pennsylvania Resources
Council will bring its traveling glass recycling bin program to Boyce Park in Plum from Oct. 24 to 29.
The bin will be at the soccer fields off Pierson Run Road and Centerview Drive.

GOP event planned
A GOP Get Out the Vote gathering is set for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at Northmoreland Park off Markle Road in Apollo.
Guest speakers include Congressman Glenn Thompson, State House Speaker Bryan Cutler, Allegheny County GOP chairman and county Councilman Sam DeMarco, Westmoreland County GOP Chairman Bill Bretz, state Auditor General candidate Tim DeFoor, state Treasurer candidate Stacy Garrity, a surrogate for state Attorney General candidate Heather Heidelbaugh, state Senate 45th District candidate Nicole Ziccarelli, 18th District congressional candidate Luke Negron and state House 25th District candidate John Ritter.

Divorce workshop
Cheswick Divorce Solutions will provide a three-hour, virtual workshop from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 16. Voter registration information
Voters must register by Oct. 19 in order to participate in the 2020 general election, which is Nov. 3. According to the Allegheny County Elections Office, voters can register online, by mail or in person at the office, 542 Forbes Ave., sixth floor, in downtown Pittsburgh. Voters can also register or update their registration when obtaining a driver’s license or PennDOT ID card.
