Join Barb Spiri to learn the ins and outs of contract (rubber) bridge, using five-card majors. Classes will be held in the library’s Johnna’s Room through mid-December. Bidding, card play and scoring will be taught in a sequential way. No prior knowledge is needed, but a love of cards is a plus.

• Classic movie showing: “Touch of Evil,” 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 5.

Orson Welles’ 1958 noir film initially received mixed reviews, but “Touch of Evil” became popular in Europe. During the 1970s, its reputation was renewed, and it is now widely regarded as not just one of Welles’ best movies, but one of the best classic-era noir films, and one of the last.

• How to be Your Own Health Care Advocate, 7 p.m. Oct. 9, hybrid event, RSVP preferred.

Jeff Weinberg, president of Caregiver Champion LLC, will discuss how to advocate for yourself and your loved ones within the ups and downs of the health care system. The talk is based on his book, “The Emperor Needs New Clothes.”

• Mushroom Safety and Foraging for Beginners, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10.

Judy Mackenroth of Walnut Ridge Farm, an experienced mushroom forager, will discuss some commonly gathered Pennsylvania mushrooms and the basics in foraging safely in the woods. A short outdoor foraging walk at the library will precede the indoor presentation.

• Retrain Your Brain with Eileen Colianni, 7 p.m. Oct. 12, hybrid event.

Counselor Colianni discusses practical how-to strategies on how to become the best you can be.

• Marilyn Monroe: The Girl Behind the Image, 7 p.m. Oct. 26, hybrid event.

Wendy Whittick of the Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club breaks through the myths about the Golden Age of Hollywood’s most glittering star.

• Emerald Celtic Trio: Celebrating the Equinox in Celtic Style, 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in the library’s gallery space.

Charles May (violin), Paula Tuttle (cello) and Tom Godfrey (guitar and flute) play music that features the styles of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. While their focus is on popular Celtic selections that are lively and rich, all three players have classical roots.

This event is free and open to the public.

• Know Your Rights in the Workplace, 7 p.m. Oct. 24.

A representative from the state’s Department of Labor Law Compliance will cover labor law issues, including employers who fail to pay agreed wages, pay their employees on time, or who deduct credit card or other payment processing fees from an employee’s tips.
