A busy section of Northern Pike in Monroeville is expected to be closed for a time starting as early as January, a PennDOT official said Friday.
The project will reduce the road to one lane between Abers Creek Road and Valerie Circle, said Steve Cowan, a PennDOT spokesman.
Monroeville Manager Tim Little said at a recent council meeting traffic will be controlled by an automated traffic light. That, however, has not yet been determined, said Cowan.
“We are not certain what the traffic control will be yet,” Cowan said, adding the ongoing work on Route 22 could make that difficult. “That determination will be made at a later date.”
The construction on Route 22 began in May and is expected to last until spring 2020.
Cowan said the work, estimated to cost up to $1.7 million of state funding, will involve excavating a large portion of the slope between those roads and replacing it with rocks and soil nails to stabilize the hillside.
The project has not yet been bid, but Cowan said a hired contractor could start by Dec. 23.
Little said the project would constrict traffic on that section of Northern Pike from January through May.
“We don’t know the start and end dates yet,” Cowan said.
