Eloisa Creighton has read the flood of online comments and social media posts about her grandson, Aceyn Ausbrook, who was shot and killed last weekend outside a Monroeville birthday party.

Now, she said she wants to add her voice to the chorus.

“People say it all the time, but he was a good kid,” Creighton said. “He could walk up to anybody and start a conversation with them. He was present. He was always there.”

Ausbrook, 19, of Monroeville, was fatally shot late Saturday, according to Allegheny County Police. First responders dispatched to Bellwood Avenue found him with a gunshot wound to the torso. He was taken to a hospital, where police said he died.

Creighton likes to remember details both big and small about her grandson with the easy smile.

After graduating from Gateway High School last year, Ausbrook — a high school lacrosse player, wrestler and sometimes-football player — started a lawn care business and was priming it to pass it along to his younger brother, Christian, now 12. He had a second brother, Victor, who is 5.

“He was always looking out for his (younger) brothers,” Creighton said.

He also had an older sister, Rashai Ausbrook, 20, of Penn Hills.

Once the grass no longer needed trimming, by this autumn, Ausbrook had taken a full-time job at a Giant Eagle store in Monroeville, Creighton said.

Family and friends said the little things made a big difference when it came to Ausbrook.

“He always held the door for somebody, no matter what,” Creighton told the Tribune-Review. “Kids don’t do that stuff anymore. But Aceyn did.”

Alexa Washington had been friends with Ausbrook since they were on the same basketball team as young kids. On Tuesday, she called him “probably the sweetest person I have ever met.”

“He listened to everything you said,” said Washington, 17, of Monroeville. “He would actually listen and be able to give advice that you didn’t think a 19-year-old could have.”

Washington remembered how tremendously positive and supportive Ausbrook was when she told him she was leaving Gateway High School for Oakland Catholic.

“At the end of the day, I feel like he would’ve done anything for me,” Washington said. “Aceyn just always supported me.”

Washington wasn’t at the open-invite birthday party Saturday night because she was visiting the University of North Florida, which she plans to attend this fall. But she heard Ausbrook left the party because he was concerned about being home before his midnight curfew.

“Aceyn being Aceyn, he was leaving at 11 to be home on time,” she laughed.

Ausbrook also was kind to people who weren’t his family and best friends, said Jamee Kovacs, who lives down the street from Creighton in Monroeville. She remembered Ausbrook playing with her son, Caleb, 12, who has special needs and is non-verbal, when Ausbrook’s immediate family lived with the Creightons.

“(Ausbrook) always acknowledged Caleb and he was the first person outside the family to play with him,” Kovacs told the Tribune-Review. “He understood Caleb needed protected.”

Kovacs is mourning Ausbrook by spending more time on social media this week.

“I saw how polite and generous and respectful he was,” she said. “I’m glad the whole world saw what I saw, too.”

No charges have been filed and no one is in custody in connection with the homicide, Allegheny County Police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting that claimed Ausbrook’s life is asked to call the county police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS.

The family has started a GoFundMe page to pay for the funeral and a memorial service, which, as of Tuesday afternoon, had 328 donations totaling nearly $22,000. Organizers said any leftover funds will be used to help buy a new vehicle for Ausbrook’s mother, as her vehicle was at the scene of the incident and now has multiple bullet holes in it.
