PennDOT extends Liberty Tunnel closures

The state Department of Transportation will continue its overnight lane closures of Pittsburgh’s Liberty Tunnel starting Sunday night.

The tunnel has been under a partial lane closure from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. since April 14 for routine inspection by Gannett Fleming crews, according to PennDOT.

The outbound lanes (southbound) will see a single-lane restriction from 10 p.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Monday to allow crews to conduct drainage flushing work.

The inbound lane (northbound) will be closed from 8 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Tuesday, weather permitting, to allow Mosites Construction crews to load and remove materials for a roof replacement project. Traffic will be detoured via Route 51 and I-376.

The tunnels will be fully open Friday and Saturday.

Work may continue Tuesday night, PennDOT said.

The Liberty Tunnel roof will be replaced this year in a nearly $3.5 million project. Partial lane closures will occur during construction, but the tunnel will still be useable.

Crash causes power outages in Oakmont

About 90 Oakmont area residents remain without power Friday morning because of a vehicle crash Thursday afternoon, according to Duquesne Light.

Residents of Pennsylvania and Lincoln avenues and Coxcomb Hill Road were impacted by the outages, according to Duquesne Light’s outage tracker.

Power is estimated to return to the areas before or by 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The vehicle crash occurred shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Hulton Road near Lincoln Avenue, according to TribLive news partner WTAE. Allegheny County 911 dispatchers told WTAE no one involved in the crash was taken to the hospital.
