State police are investigating a fatal crash involving multiple vehicles that happened early Wednesday on the Parkway East.

Police said the crash happened as traffic was slowing down because of an overturned vehicle. At that time, a three-vehicle collision happened involving a tractor-trailer. One of the drivers in the crash was taken to Mercy Hospital and later pronounced dead.

First responders were called just after 6:20 a.m. to just past the Oakland exit heading toward the Squirrel Hill tunnel.

Morning traffic camera footage showed emergency crews blocking the right lanes at the scene, with two vehicles and a tractor-trailer disabled.

All vehicles were cleared and outbound lanes were reopened to traffic by 10:30 a.m.

The incident caused strong traffic backups for commuters during the morning rush hour. Outbound traffic was able to get by only in the left-hand lane. Traffic coming from Pittsburgh was backed up well before the Birmingham Bridge.
