There’s no getting around the expensive price tag for sewer fixes in Export, but borough officials are hoping a state grant will help put a significant dent in it.

Borough officials have applied for one of the H2O Program grants offered by the state’s Department of Community and Economic Development to help with the structural rehabilitation of their sanitary sewer pipeline.

They are seeking just over $250,000 total to help fund work required by the borough’s consent order agreement with the state’s Department of Environmental Protection. The borough is asking DCED for about 212,500 and must come up with a 15% match of about $37,500.

Council President Barry Delissio said that if the borough secures the grant, the scope of work will cover the major defects identified in the sewer pipeline and manholes where they are needed.

As part of the consent order agreement with the DEP, borough officials are required to identify all of the manholes in Export.

“They showed up before as not able to be found,” Delissio said. “We know now the reason they couldn’t find them is they weren’t there.”

Grant applications are being accepted through Dec. 13. A date for grant award announcements has not been set.

The H2O PA Act was established by the General Assembly in July 2008. It provides for single-year or multi-year grants to municipalities or municipal authorities to assist with drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer projects.
