The National Aviary in Pittsburgh on Tuesday announced the death of its “beloved and well-known” macaw Benito.

The aviary’s male Hyacinth Macaw died unexpectedly over the weekend from an aneurysm.

The jewel-toned bird, once featured on an episode of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” arrived at the Aviary’s Allegheny Center neighborhood in the 1990s. Officials did not say how old the bird was.

Benito did not show any symptoms before his death, which aviary officials said is common with aneurysms.

Aviary staff are monitoring Benito’s mate, Sapphira, and will adjust her care if needed.

People flocked to social media to reminisce on memories with Benito.

“Benito was the first macaw I ever (got) to know on a personal level as an intern in 2014,” one Facebook user, with the profile name Sylvia Ronquillo, said. “He was the macaw I compared all other macaws to.”

The bird, she said, “taught me to laugh and dance through whatever path I chose.”

Another commenter, John English, said Benito “was my wingman” when he volunteered at the aviary.

“Benito was my favorite friend at the aviary,” another commenter with the username Anna Corlett said. “He was so interactive and friendly and would sometimes say ‘bye’ when I turned to leave. He made our trips so special.”
