Superintendent Brendan Hyland announced the creation of a task force on artificial intelligence at the Sept. 24 North Allegheny School Board meeting.

Hyland said the initiative aligns with the district’s recent selection to join as a member of the league of innovative schools.

Under the direction of Jim Cox, North Allegheny’s director of technology and innovation, the AI task force will guide how technology will be used throughout the district’s 12 schools.

“Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming society, and education is no exception. To stay ahead, we must thoughtfully define how AI will be used responsibly and effectively in North Allegheny,” Hyland said.

The task force will consist of administrators, teachers, counselors, students, parents and community members.

The group will work on drafting the district’s vision for AI, “establishing ethical guidelines, exploring opportunities to enhance technology and learning and recommendations to policy, curriculum and professional development,” Hyland said.

Over the next year, the task force will study, dialogue and collaborate with the goal of presenting concrete recommendations by next fall or early winter for review and potential implementation by the board for 2027.

Additional information will be coming from Cox and his team through district communications.

“It’s time to look at this very important initiative,” Hyland said.
