Thirty-four streets in McCandless are scheduled to be resurfaced this year as part of the town’s annual paving program.

Council voted unanimously in February to award a $999,492 contract to Youngblood Paving of Wampum, Lawrence County, which was the lowest responsible bidder for the annual paving program.

Town manager Bob Grimm said efforts were made to widen the pool of companies submitting bids for the work.

In addition to advertising in a daily newspaper, the town sought bids from minority-owned companies by placing ads in the Pittsburgh Courier, which primarily serves the Black community, he said.

“We’ve done our best to get out into other areas of the community,” he told council.

Grimm said the streets selected for paving this year are part of the town’s 20-year road resurfacing plan, but “a few changes were made based on conditions that we found in the field.”

The manager said the bid that was awarded is within budget and that the company doing the work “has a good reputation.”

“They haven’t done work in McCandless in the past few years, but Youngblood is an excellent paving company and we expect a quality product when they come in,” he said.
