The Pennsylvania Resource Council is holding an event to collect hard-to-recycle items at La Roche University on July 31.

North Hills residents who have been hanging onto hard-to-recycle items can unload them later this month at a collection event at La Roche University.

The Pennsylvania Resource Council will be at the university from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 31 to collect items that cannot be put out for regular weekly trash collection.

Unlike previous collection events sponsored by the organizations, participants will need to register before bringing items to the site.

Slots to drop items off between 8:45 and 9:30 a.m. are already filled, but openings remain through 1 p.m. Each half-hour time slot has openings for between 60 and 100 participants.

Because of the high demand for slots, organizers ask that participants only sign up if they can attend. Registrations can be canceled on the sign-up page or by sending an email to: info@prc.org.

On the day of the collection, participants are asked to place the items in the trunk and remain in their vehicles. Payments for items can be made with credit and debit cards as well as cash.

There is no cost to recycle computer towers, laptops, tablets, servers, routers, modems, keyboards and other accessories. Also collected for free are home and cell phones, DVD players, VCRs, stereos, microwave ovens, copiers and scanners, electronic cables, video game consoles, expanded polystyrene packaging material and all colors of glass bottles, jugs and jars.

Batteries, CFL light bulbs and media such as VHS, DVDs and cassette tapes will not be collected.

A fee is charged to recycle the following items:

• Flat screen and CRT computer monitors: $20 each

• Televisions: $30 each

• Console or rear projection TVs: $40 each

• Printers: $5 each

• Window air conditioners and dehumidifiers: $10 each

• Fluorescent tubes: $2 per 4-foot tube

• Vehicle tires: $4 without rims, $10 with rims

• Hard drive data destruction verification: $11 for first one, $3 for additional drives

La Roche University is located at 9000 Babcock Boulevard in McCandless.
