The North Allegheny School District is hosting a question and answer session for college graduates who are interested in serve as substitute teacher.
The July 18 event begins at 2 p.m. and is aimed at people who hold a bachelor’s degree in any subject from an accredited college or university in the United States but do not have state teaching certificate.
Applications for the Fall 2019 “Guest Substitute Teacher” program will be accepted through July 31. Successful candidates will be invited to attend a mandatory program orientation on Sept. 17.
People who already have a teaching certificate must register with the Northern Area Substitute Teacher Service Consortium to serve as a substitute teacher for the district. The consortium also accepts applications for substitutes in the Hampton and Avonworth school districts.
People in the Guest Substitute Teacher program who meet the eligibility requirements will receive an emergency permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Education that lasts for one school year. Permits can be renewed at the district’s discretion for subsequent years.
People selected for the program must attend a one-day orientation, a pair of four-hour classroom observations and a 10-hour online training course.
The district pays substitute teachers $90 a day for the first 90, non-consecutive days; and $110 for subsequent days during the same school year.
