Northland Library offering variety of special programs for adults, kids during August

Northland Public Library is offering the following special programs during August.

Some require registration online at northlandlibrary.org or by calling 412-366-8100. The library is located at 300 Cumberland Road in McCandless.

• Aug. 3, 1:30 p.m. — Choosing the Right Rose Bush

When it comes to roses, there are many choices for color, fragrance and garden usage. Craig Jansen of the Pittsburgh Rose Society will discuss which variety of rose is best for you. He will cover the differences between hybrid, floribunda, minis and various shrub roses.

• Aug. 8, 8 to 7 p.m. — Projecting Personal Power

Power is defined as the ability to get things done. Personal power is the ability to project that level of competence. In this presentation, Bill Acheson will analyze both. After a brief review of the bases of power, he will focus on the nonverbal communication skills that project personal power in a variety of settings.

• Aug. 21, 7 p.m. — A Celebration of Animation

Author and pop culture historian Marty Gitlin will bring his book “A Celebration of Animation” to life with clips from some of your favorite cartoons at this all ages program. Kids will learn about the characters their parents grew up with while adults might just learn to love the cartoons children have embraced today.

• Aug. 22, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Better Your Balance and Forget about Falls

Christine Fiori of NovaCare will discuss ways to maintain good balance and flexibility to prevent falls. The program will outline some of the exercises that can be done at home to improve balance. Registration required.

• Aug. 29, 7 p.m. — The Typewriter: Old Technology, New Possibilities

Frederic Durbin, local author and typewriter enthusiast, will share a brief historical introduction and an overview of the creative applications of a typewriter. Durbin will suggest some reasons for using a typewriter today, followed by information on how to go about finding a typewriter of your own, what to look out for when buying one and how to clean and maintain the device. Registration required.
