Northland Library offering variety of special programs through September

Following are some of the upcoming programs being offered at Northland Public Library. Some require registration online at northlandlibrary.org or by calling 412-366-8100. The library is at 300 Cumberland Road in McCandless.
• A Celebration of Animation, Aug. 21, 7 p.m. — Author and pop culture historian Marty Gitlin will bring his book “A Celebration of Animation” to life with clips from some of your favorite cartoons at this all ages program. Kids will learn about the characters their parents grew up with while adults might just learn to love the cartoons children have embraced today.
• Better Your Balance and Forget about Falls, Aug. 22, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Christine Fiori of NovaCare will discuss ways to maintain good balance and flexibility to prevent falls. The program will outline some of the exercises that can be done at home to improve balance. Registration required.
• The Typewriter: Old Technology, New Possibilities, Aug. 29, 7 p.m. — Frederic Durbin, a local author and typewriter enthusiast, will share a brief historical introduction and an overview of the creative applications of a typewriter. He will suggest some reasons for using a typewriter today, followed by information on how to go about finding a typewriter of your own, what to look out for when buying one, and how to clean and maintain it. Registration is required.
• What’s it Worth? Appraisal Fair, Sept. 7, 1 to 4 p.m. — Curious about a family heirloom or garage sale find? Certified appraiser Kurt Shaw will be on hand to to tell you just how much your antiques or collectibles are worth.
$10 per item, due day of appraisal. Limit of three items per person. No coins, stamps or comic books will be considered. Registration is required.
• Medicare: Putting the Pieces Together, Sept., 7 p.m. — Program will explain the Medicare program and important time frames for enrolling. Information will include the various supplemental, Medicare Advantage and prescription drug insurance options that are available locally.
• New Choices Career Development: Sept. 30, 9:30 a.m. Classes follow on Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28; and Nov. 4, 11, 18, 25 and 26 — Course by PA Women Work’s New Choices for women and men re-entering the work force or looking to change careers. Program covers creating a resume that has impact, strengthening interview skills, job placement assistance and other job development skills.
Registration is required. Attendance at first class required before taking followup sessions.
