A Pittsburgh police cadet was fired after authorities said he drove drunk — with a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit — after downing multiple beers over four hours at a North Hills bar.

Robert Redman, 33, of Ohio Township, told Franklin Park police he had seven or eight beers at Barry’s Pub in McCandless, leaving the Perry Highway bar shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, according to a criminal complaint in the case.

Cara Cruz, a Pittsburgh police spokeswoman, confirmed Thursday that Redman no longer was employed by the city force.

Redman had been a member of the Pittsburgh police training academy’s recent class, which graduated March 6, Cruz said. As a cadet, he was an officer working during a probationary period.

Cruz declined further comment.

Pittsburgh police hired Redman full-time on July 24, 2023, city records show. His job description was “police officer recruit.”

Redman declined comment Thursday.

The head of the Pittsburgh police union told TribLive the Redman arrest was an internal matter that the collective bargaining agreement barred him from discussing.

A Franklin Park police officer pulled over Redman’s gray Honda Civic at 2:17 a.m. Saturday after Redman drove through a stop sign, the complaint said.

During the traffic stop, Redman spoke with slurred speech and the inside of his vehicle smelled like alcohol, the complaint said. Redman’s eyes were watery, he had difficulty speaking and seemed confused.

A breathalyzer test showed Redman’s blood-alcohol level that night was 0.175%, the complaint said. The legal limit for driving in Pennsylvania is 0.08%.

Redman told police he had a prior DUI arrest more than 10 years ago but it had been expunged, the complaint said.

Franklin Park police charged Redman with two DUI counts and two motor-vehicle violations. His attorney was not listed in the court record.

He is scheduled to be arraigned and have a preliminary hearing July 9 in front of District Judge Giuseppe Rosselli.
