Scottdale man charged with robbery, receiving stolen property after McCandless bank heist

A Scottdale man has been arrested after, police say, he robbed a Huntington Bank in McCandless on Tuesday, according to a criminal complaint filed by McCandless police .

Raymond H. Zwibel, of Scottdale, was charged with robbery and receiving stolen property.

About $1,500 to $1,600 was stolen from the bank on McKnight Road shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, the complaint said.

Police said three McCandless officers responded to the scene.

According to the complaint, a teller at the Huntington Bank told police that a man wearing a hat, mask and sunglasses approached and dropped a note on the counter, which read, “Give me all of the money.”

The teller told police the man left the bank and ran along the left side of Dunham Sports toward Dollar Bank until he was out of sight, the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Zwibel had been in UPMC Mercy hospital the day of the robbery because of open sores on his arms. Zwibel’s nephew told police his uncle is a heroin user and seeking rehab, the compaint said.

The nephew told police he picked up Zwibel from the hospital around 1 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

According to the complaint, Zwibel told the nephew he needed to retrieve “stimulus money” that was deposited into his bank account. The nephew drove Zwibel to the Giant Eagle on McKnight Road, located near three banks, police said.

The nephew said Zwibel “came back to the car in a hurry,” and urged him to drive when the nephew had asked him what happened, police said. The newphew told police he drove his uncle to a house in Pleasant Hills, the complaint said.

Zwibel was taken to the Allegheny County Jail. He was arraigned early Saturday morning, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sept. 13 before District Judge William Wagner.

McCandless police said they were assisted in the investigation by the FBI, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Ross Township police.
