Women's History Month documentary, virtual book discussions and more at Northland Public Library

Following is a sampling of upcoming programs offered at Northland Public Library. Some of the virtual programs require registration online at northlandlibrary.org or by calling 412-366-8100. The library is located at 300 Cumberland Road in McCandless.

Registration and links for live streaming many of the programs for children can be found on Charlotte Fezziwig’s Facebook page at facebook.com/charlotte.fezziwig.

Northland Public Library is open for limited in-person services. Patrons over the age of 2 are required to wear a face mask over their nose and mouth at all times in the library building, including those who have received a Covid-19 vaccine.

To promote quick visits and ensure social distancing, seating throughout the library is limited and food and beverages are not permitted in the library.

The Computer Center is open by appointment only for a one-hour per patron, per day visit.

To reduce contact services, patrons are encouraged to use self-checkout machines and online resources as much as possible to limit time at the Library.

Registration is required to attend these free virtual programs where noted.

Adult special programs

• Women’s History Month documentary: March 11 at 6:30 p.m. — Celebrate Women’s History Month with a viewing of “And She Could Be Next,” a documentary about women of color working as candidates and organizers to gain representation in politics. Registration is required for this virtual film viewing. A Zoom link will be emailed the week of the program.

• The Steel City in World War II: March 25 at 7 p.m. — Western Pennsylvania industries contributed to the war effort in an impressive variety of ways. Join staff from the Heinz History Center as they talk about how Pittsburgh helped the war effort on land, air, and sea. Registration is required for this virtual program. A Zoom link will be emailed the week of the program.

• Healthy Aging for Your Brain and Body: April 1 at 6 p.m. Staff from the Alzheimer’s Association will discuss lifestyle choices that may help you keep your brain and body healthy as you age. Learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. Registration is required for this virtual program. A Zoom link will be emailed the week of the program.

• Remarkable Relics: Museum lecture series — This series promotes the Experience Kits initiative at select Allegheny County Libraries. For more information, see northlandlibrary.org/experience-kits. Registration is required for each Zoom presentation.

March 16: Meadowcroft Rockshelter & Historic Village: travel back 19,000 years from the comfort of your couch to experience the oldest site of human habitation in North America.

March 23: McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center: the history of the Mon Valley. See many artifacts from the original 1832 McKeesport schoolhouse to the Industry Room, which displays a variety of artifacts from McKeesport’s National Tube Works.

• April 6, Pennsylvania Trolley Museum: learn more about the vital role the streetcar, or “trolley,” played in the growth of Pittsburgh as well as all 20th-century American cities.

Book discussions

• No Book Required: March 16 at 7 p.m. — Read a good book and just need to tell someone about it? Feel the need to escape into a good book but can’t find the right one? Join this online book club – no book necessary! We’ll chat about what we’ve read lately that kept us up all night as well as the books we gave up on.
