Irwin Park renovations slated

People using Irwin Park this summer will see improvements this summer as a result of a $362,746 project.

Irwin Borough Council recently awarded a contract to Dunn Rite Construction of Forest Hills for the work to pave both parking lots at the park and improve the walking track and the lighting at the popular recreational site.

The project should start this month and be completed within three-to-four weeks, said Steve Schmitt, borough engineer with Gibson Thomas Engineering of Latrobe.

The money to pay for the improvements to the park came from Irwin’s Community Development Block Grant funding.

North Huntingdon seeks funds for pickelball courts

North Huntingdon wants to give people a place to play the growing sport of pickleball, which has elements of table tennis, paddleball and tennis in a fast-paced game.

The township commissioners recently approved an application for a 110,500 grant from the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program to build the pickleball courts at the municipality’s Oak Hollow Park off Morris Avenue.

The United States of America Pickleball Association says a regulation size court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, which is the size of a badminton court. This allows for two players to square off against each other or for a game of doubles. By comparison, the standard tennis court’s playing area is 78 feet long and 27 feet wide.

Irwin sells property

Irwin Borough has sold a 78-foot-by-78-foot lot it owns along Chestnut Street to a real estate development firm.

Borough council recently approved the sale of the lot at 711 Chestnut St., to Painter Property Development LLC of North Huntingdon, for $5,200.

Painter Property Development was the highest bidder for the lot.

The borough had acquired the property in July 2017 from the Westmoreland County Land Bank, according to documents filed with the Westmoreland County Recorder of Deeds.
