Members of the Norwin High School Theatre Company cast of ‘High School Musical ’ who play the roles of Gabriella and Troy are (from left): Abby Szymanski and Michael Barone (Thurday and Saturday cast) and Carter Kunicky and Ashley Baker (Friday and Sunday) cast.

The Norwin High School auditorium will come alive in late March with a musical of high school high drama replete with cliques and rivalries.

The Norwin High School Theatre Company will entertain audiences with “High School Musical,” the play based on the hit Disney television film about students performing in a musical, at 7 p.m. on March 20 to 22 and 2 p.m. March 23.

“The students have worked so hard and I want to congratulate them on their efforts,” said Lauren Scheirer, Norwin Theatre Company producer, vocal director and district sponsor.

“High School Musical” is a coming-of-age story that is able to showcase everyone’s talent, the theatre company said. The production consists of 86 students in the cast and crew.

The family-friendly musical tells the story of two teenagers — the new smart girl at school and a boy who is captain of the basketball team, who end up falling in love.

Senior Abby Szymanski, who portrays Gabriella in the Thursday and Saturday performances, said she is excited to be part of the classic show.

“I’ve always loved the movie and it’s been a dream to play Gabriella. Rehearsals have been so much fun and I’m especially happy to be sharing a role with my very best friend (Ashley Baker),” said Szymanski, who is the theatre company student co-president.

“I cannot wait to perform this iconic Disney show,” said Baker, who will portray Gabriella in the Friday and Sunday performances.

“’High School Musical’ has created a stereotypical, but fun opinion of theatre clubs and it is so interesting to play in a show inside of a show. Gabriella is definitely one of my favorite roles and I am super excited that I have the opportunity to play her,” said Baker, a senior and theater company student vice president.

Michael Barone plays Troy in the Thursday and Saturday performances and Carter Kunicky plays Troy in the Friday and Sunday shows.

Scheirer is assisted in the production by Erin Shrader, who is the creative and costume director and choreographer, along with Todd Leighty, who is the technical director.

Tickets can be purchased online at the theatre company website at norwintheatreclub.com.
