Irwin to livestream council meetings

Those who want to watch the Irwin Borough council meetings, may get that chance in November.

Council in October awarded a contract to Precision Copy Products of Clairton to install an Aquos board with a camera to livestream the meetings at a cost no more than $8,495. There will be an interactive screen with microphones.

Shari Martino, borough manager, said the livestream system will be hard-wired and not dependent upon Wi-Fi, which is not consistent where the borough meets on First Street at the public works building.

Councilman Tyler Baum earlier this year had proposed livestreaming the meetings in order to increase transparency and the public’s access to borough business.

Gymnastic center to hold food drive

A Penn Township gymnastic center is holding a Thanksgiving food drive until Nov. 20 to benefit the Westmoreland County Food Bank in Delmont, which distributes food to pantries that serve the needy in the county.

The gymnastic team members and coaches at Alison Biondi’s Gymnastics at 4066 Route 130, will be accepting donations of non-perishable food from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays and from 9 a. m. to noon on Saturdays.

The food items most needed are: peanut butter, cereal, canned goods, boxed meals such as macaroni and cheese, Hamburger Helper, canned soups and canned tuna, chicken and salmon.

For more information call the gymnastic center at 724-744-3800 or email abginfo@alisonbiondigymnastics.com.

Library group to hold soup, bake sale

The Friends of the Sewickley Township Public Library will hold an Election Day soup and bake sale from 10 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Herminie United Methodist Church, 3365 Pike St., until the supplies are sold out.

The library support group also is seeking donations of soup and baked goods. Those interesting in donating can email sewickley@wlnonline.org or call 724-875-1655.

The proceeds benefit the Friends of the Sewickley Township Public Library. The library was forced to move from its location in the Sewickley Township Recreation Center in Herminie earlier this year because the building was closed and it continues to operate in smaller space at the former Sewickley Township Municipal Authority office in Herminie.

Election Day lunch slated in West Newton

The West Newton First Church of God at 157 N. Second St., will be serving an Election Day Luncheon featuring homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, desserts and drinks from 11 a. m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 7.

Patrons can eat in or take out their meals. For more information, call 724-872-7467.

Irwin bridge to be replaced

The Fairwood Manor Bridge that carries Fairwood Drive in Irwin over an unnamed tributary of Tinker’s Run, is scheduled to be replaced next year.

Irwin Council recently awarded Advanced Builders Inc. of Perryopolis a $2.13 million contract to replace the bridge. The project will be funded entirely by money from the federal government.

The approval is contingent upon receiving all of the bonds and certificates of insurance, as reviewed and approved by PennDOT.

The bridge had been slated for replacement for the past few years, as a result of erosion around the abutments of the structure.
