Butler Street between the 62nd Street Bridge and 57th Street in Upper Lawrenceville will be closed for at least a week because of damage caused by a 42-inch water main break Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The break flooded the street as well as several nearby buildings.

Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority spokeswoman Mora McLaughlin said crews were still evaluating the extent of the damage Friday afternoon.

The break happened near Pittsburgh Collision and just a few blocks from the Pittsburgh zoo parking lot.

By noon Friday, the water had been turned back on in the few Butler Street buildings in Upper Lawrenceville that were still without it.

“They’ve been working to excavate the area and expose the pipes to see where the break is,” McLaughlin said. “It’s a pretty standard process. They’re just going to cut out that portion of broken pipe and replace it with a new section.”

McLaughlin said that a detour would stay in place until the repair work is finished. The detour runs west across the 62nd Street Bridge instead of continuing on Butler. Travelers going east toward Highland Park from Downtown will be rerouted across the 40th Street Bridge to Route 28 North.

Local traffic can continue to move up to 57th Street.
