The first-ever communitywide cleanup in Penn Hills on July 27 was a success by any metric, sponsors say, attracting 172 volunteers who filled nearly 399 trash bags.
Volunteers covered 6.5 miles of road between 12 neighborhoods at the event, which was organized by the Penn Hills Rotary and Penn Hills Community Development Corporation. Litter-getters included representatives from a host of Penn Hills businesses and community groups as well as several state and local elected officials.
Prizes were awarded at a post-cleanup picnic in categories such as most bags collected, which went to the Rosedale Civic Association, and dirtiest volunteer, an honor bestowed on Stephanie Strauss, athletic director for the Penn Hills School District.
In a social media post, organizers said they hope to make the cleanup an annual event.
