Food trucks are now allowed to operate in Penn Hills.
Council on Oct. 19 unanimously approved an ordinance that establishes rules for how a food truck should operate within the municipality.
The ordinance allows food trucks to operate on property, with permission from the owner, for 30 days after applying and paying for a permit. Planning director Chris Blackwell said the fee is $100.
The permit will be in addition to the permits and licensing already required by state and county entities.
Council members were happy to approve the new rules – with a few suggestions for tweaking to make the process more appealing to food truck vendors.
Mayor Pauline Calabrese said she loved the idea but would like to see the 30-day permit length be extended to six months or a year.
Councilman John Petrucci said the fee could be lowered to perhaps $50.
Deputy Mayor Catherine Sapp said she would be interested in organizing an event that brings together several food trucks to gather in one place. She said she’ll speak with other council members and the mayor about that idea.
