Where can you drop off your Christmas tree to be recycled?

Allegheny County again offered its Christmas Tree Recycling Program where residents could drop off their trees at any of the county’s nine parks through Jan. 14. The trees will be mulched and used in the parks.

As Christmas season passes and the New Year approaches, there are plenty of Christmas tree recycling programs to ensure your holiday decorations do not go to waste.

The Allegheny County is holding its annual Christmas tree recycling program through Jan. 14. Various drop-off locations will be accepting real Christmas trees from 8 a.m. until dusk. Lights, decorations, tinsel and stands must be removed from trees prior to dropping them off.

Sandra Bauer, Executive Services Coordinator for the Township of McCandless, said recycling Christmas trees can help avoid them landing in landfills.

“We chip them to add to our compost material,” she said.

Here are the drop-off points for each publication’s coverage area:

Plum Advance Leader: Plum, Oakmont, Verona

• Boyce Park in the soccer fields parking lot

• Trees can be left along with the trash for County Hauling to pick up and recycle.

Pine Creek Journal: Pine, Richland, Gibsonia

• Through Vogel Disposal, Christmas trees will be picked up during the first two weeks of January.

Hampton Journal: Allison Park, Hampton, McCandless, Gibsonia, Shaler

• Hartwood Acres Park in the Middle Road parking lot

• North Park in the swimming pool parking lot

• Shaler does not recycle trees.

• Hampton residents can leave their trees to be recycled by Waste Management starting after Christmas through February.

• McCandless will be recycling Christmas trees from Jan. 3-28. Trees can be left in front front of house to be recycled.

Penn Hills Progress: Penn Hills, Verona

• Trees can be left along with the trash for County Hauling to pick up and recycle.

• The Times Express (Monroeville, Pitcairn)

• Monroeville residents can leave their Christmas trees by the curbside on regular trash days. Trees are taken to Boyce Park where they are recycled.
